Cooperative Principle 7: Concern for Community

The seventh cooperative principle, Concern for Community, explains that cooperatives work for the sustainable development of communities through policies and programs accepted by their members. As a technology cooperative, NISC is committed to not only providing world-class solutions and service to our Members, but also to ensuring we’re being good stewards in our communities and respectful of our environment.

NISC employees give back in numerous ways throughout the year, whether by NISC’s unique Benevolence Fund, which is a donation-based fund that helps NISC employees in need, or by our bi-annual Days of Service in which NISC employees dedicate a Saturday to volunteering in their community.

We’re also conscious of the impact we’re leaving on our environment and strive to ensure our offices are eco-friendly. Below are a number of changes we’ve made to continue working towards this goal:

  • Recycle containers in each of our offices for paper, cardboard, bottles, etc.
  • Filtered water faucets
  • Automated, LED lights and controlled outdoor lighting
  • High-efficiency toilets
  • Nature-friendly properties (Shawano Nature’s Friend Award)

NISC also has Volunteer Committees, which focus on giving back throughout the year to charities and organizations recommended by our employees. We’ve raised thousands of dollars for organizations including the United Way, the Alzheimer’s Association and Brave the Shave, a cause dedicated to finding cures for childhood cancers and providing support during cancer treatments.

In August/September 2017, numerous NISC Members were impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in Texas and Florida. To help raise proceeds, NISC, in partnership with our subsidiary company iGEAR, created Co-op Strong t-shirts, with 100 percent of proceeds going to hurricane relief. Over 5,000 shirts were printed and $46,000 was distributed between the Texas Electric Cooperatives (TEC) Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund and the Cooperative Development Foundation for Hurricane Irma Relief.

In honor of NISC’s recent 50th anniversary, employees also raised funds for NISC’s Giving 50@50 campaign, which gave back to NRECA International and Foundation for Rural Service – two exemplary organizations with ties to NISC’s beginnings. Click here to read more about the campaign!
