This opening is on our GIS Services team. The GIS Services team collaborates with the GIS support team, and works with Utility Members across the country who are using our mapping products and other GIS systems. The team produces maps for our Members while ensuring quality control on mapping projects and that the specifications of the customer's requests have been met. Having the right tools is key to an efficient work flow. We empower our Members with maps at everyone’s fingertips. NISC’s GIS allows our Members to capture, manage, analyze, and display their data across the organization.

 What you will do as a GIS Technical Specialist

  • Interpret construction drawings of distribution facilities
  • Perform routine database maintenance tasks using GIS applications
  • Compile, manipulate and refine geographic data with minimal errors
  • Initiate regular quality control checks of GIS Data to ensure data integrity
  • Execute course of action under minimal supervision for assigned GIS projects
  • Maintain data, correctly archives and ensures quality control of personal projects
  • Develop and create maps that successfully communicate geographic information
  • Expedite issues and remove obstacles to effectively maintain progress of GIS projects
  • Produce detailed, high-quality GIS products (digital and hard copy) in accordance with technical guidelines and customer requirements
  • Interact professionally and positively with all internal and external customers while meeting deadlines for assigned projects and tasks
  • Document daily activities, events, and status reports with accuracy while meeting deadlines

Desired Experience

Proficient in the use of GIS Products:

     ○ ArcGIS Desktop

     ○ ArcCatalog

     ○ ArcToolbox

  • Proficient computer skills in:

     ○ Microsoft Word

     ○ Microsoft Access

  • Proficient at creating new layers with specific fields and domains
  • Understands the functionality of a geometric network and how to set them up
  • Understands the benefits of map performance and can improve performance through symbology and caching
  • Understands cartographic principles and graphic design principles in order to be able to think of color, symbology, fonts, etc.
  • Proficient at setting up, creating, and trouble shooting .mxd files for use in ArcGIS, including but not limited to; symbology, table joins and labeling

Other desired qualifications

Bachelors Degree or two years related professional experience
